My laptop's battery is badly calibrated

https://github.com/linrunner/TLP/issues/316

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=pop+os+acpi_call&atb=v269-1&ia=web

sudo tlp-stat -b

tlp recalibrate BAT0 - recalibrate the main battery

let's install acpi-call-dkms

let's update firmware for my laptop

add modules: tp_smapi, acpi-call-dkms

to try:

sudo apt install power-calibrate
power-calibrate -r
$ sudo tlp-stat -b
...
tp-smapi = inactive (ThinkPad not supported)
...
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_full_design             =  80400 [mWh]
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_full                    =  43840 [mWh]

battery seems degraded to ~50% capacity. can't seem to initialize tp-smapi kernel module:

from sudo modprobe tp-smapi:

[   59.962439] thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec_request_row: arg0 rejected: (0x01:0x00)->0x00
[   59.962447] thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec_read_row: failed requesting row: (0x01:0x00)->0xfffffffb
[   59.962454] thinkpad_ec: initial ec test failed

maybe just having upgraded the firmware helped? let's see… maybe it might have been due to a hard reboot, without suspend? let's see…

with reboot, sudo tlp recalirate itself started force-discharging on its own without me needing to unplug the charger.

2021-09-26 00:51 aaaaand as soon as I unplug the charger and try to use this again, same problem again…

Let's try to get some help about this from Lenovo.

Is my laptop supposed to work at high usage on closed mode? Will that hurt the battery?

Will replacing the battery help?

https://support.lenovo.com/ch/de/account/myproducts

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/de/warrantylookup#/

Let's download ldiag_4.41.0_linux.iso, and burn it into a flash drive and running diagnostics on the battery.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/en/solutions/bootableusb

Lenovo also has live chat with support people.

2022-02-09 11:30

Ugh. Really annoying. Got some errors in console. And nothing seems to happen. God dammit.

2022-02-09 16:52

Charging goes super slow:

Discharge curve seemed reasonable:

2022-02-09 19:17

However, sometimes it'll keep reporting 0% charge for hours while being plugged in into AC power (over the dedicated power connector). And it looks like the battery is not reporting reasonable charge levels:

$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_now
cat: /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_now: No such device
$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/capacity
cat: /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/capacity: No such device

Sometimes the laptop will also report 0% power while discharging.

dmesg contains some stuff about crashes? see dmesg.txt - has some oops in command tpacpi-bat

hmm: https://blog.monosoul.dev/2021/10/16/ubuntu-21-10-and-acpi-call-dkms-bug/

sudo /usr/share/tlp/tpacpi-bat -v -g ST 1 reproduces the crash.

maybe I can just remove tlp?

Removed tlp, tlp-rdw, acpi-call-dkms

maybe one thing I should do at some point is boot into windows and see if the issues also happen there

2022-02-12 22:34

Eh, let's remove from Do next

2022-06-22 12:15

follow-up later

2022-06-30 20:16

technician replaced the battery and keyboard. let's wait and see whether it works OK now, and if not, get system board replaced.

2022-08-07 22:38

Lenovo technician: might be either a problem with the battery, or with the system board. he'll replace the battery. if it's the system board, told me to call Lenovo to get the system board replaced. should take maybe 24-48 hours to get that done.
